Michéal O’Rourke
Specialist Ophthalmologist & Oculoplastic Surgeon
Dr O’Rourke is a Dublin-based ophthalmologist with international experience in treating problems affecting the eyelids, eye socket (orbit) and tear drainage (lacrimal) system. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin and subsequently completed the Irish specialist training programme in ophthalmic surgery being proficient in all areas of the specialty. He subsequently pursued further subspecialisation in the areas of oculoplastic, orbit and lacrimal surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne including the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.
His particular areas of speciality include:
- Cataract surgery
- Eyelid disorders: periocular skin cancer, abnormal eyelid position such as drooping of the eyelid (ptosis), entropion & ectropion (eyelid turned inwards or outwards), excess skin (dermatochalasis) and blepharoplasty surgery
- Eye socket (orbit): thyroid eye disease, tumours, trauma and problems associated with loss of an eye
- Tear drainage (lacrimal): endoscopic (scarless) DCR for blocked tear ducts
- Paediatric oculoplastic: congenital watering, ptosis
He holds appointments at major teaching public hospitals in Dublin. His research is published in peer-recognised scientific journals and is presented at scientific conferences nationally and internationally.
