Jeremy O’Connor

Jeremy is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a specialist interest in glaucoma. He graduated from UCD in 1999 and trained as an Ophthalmologist in Ireland, and completed the Irish Surgical Training scheme in 2012. Prior to commencement of HST he spent a 2 year period doing lab based research into the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of glaucoma in the BioSciences Institute in UCC. He was awarded an MD degree for this work. He has many peer reviewed publications in all areas of Ophthalmology, but particularly glaucoma.
He completed a fellowship in the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne in the subspecialty of glaucoma. He has also completed a 12 month fellowship in Cataract and Refractive Surgery in the Mater Hospital, Dublin. On return from Australia he took up a consultant post in University Hospital Limerick for a period of 2 years, and is now a consultant in the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin, having commenced the post in February 2015.
He is a very accomplished and proficient cataract surgeon, having performed many thousands of the procedure. He has a real interest in the surgical management of glaucoma. He is proficient in MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery), particularly the istent and hydrus microshunt. He has performed hundreds of trabeculectomy operations, and regularly performs complex tube shunt procedures, particularly the Paul Glaucoma implant and the Ahmed valve. He has recently adopted the use of the Preserflo microshunt for appropriate cases. He does laser procedures for glaucoma in the form of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), YAG peripheral iridotomy, iridoplasty and cyclodiode laser.
